ELRIG and CPHI 2024: a whirlwind of networking and insights

I recently had the privilege of attending two significant industry events: European Laboratory Research and Innovation Group (ELRIG) at ExCeL London, and Convention of Pharmaceutical Ingredients (CPHI) 2024 in Fiera, Milan. Both exhibitions provided valuable insights and opportunities to connect with key players in the life sciences and pharmaceutical sectors. While each had its own character, they shared a common theme of building meaningful relationships, reconnecting with longtime press colleagues and uncovering new business opportunities.

ELRIG: A day of insights and social connections

My time at ELRIG was short but intense. I attended just one day of the event, and was impressed by the number of stands and attendees. It offered fantastic opportunities to engage with cutting-edge innovators in the life sciences field, and it was great to see numerous clients in person, as well as several INTEGRA Biosciences products that we’ve been involved in launching on display for the first time. Everyone I spoke to was enthusiastic about their products and technologies, making it a thoroughly engaging – although admittedly exhausting – day, and well worth the visit!

After the day’s sessions, I attended a SAMPS (Sales and Marketing Professionals in Science) networking evening, which provided a refreshing social break with like-minded individuals. It was a great reminder of the importance of face-to-face interaction in today’s digital-heavy world. We not only discussed many industry trends, but also shared stories of navigating the challenges of marketing in such a specialised field, and all over a large glass of wine. The event was a brilliant way to unwind, connect with colleagues on a personal level, and exchange ideas in a relaxing setting.

CPHI: A mini city of innovation and opportunity

In contrast, CPHI in Milan was a completely different beast – and I mean that in the best way possible. The heavens opened as I arrived, and we were treated to nearly a month’s worth of rain in a single day. I attended for two days, and felt like I’d entered a bustling mini city, complete with towering exhibition stands and halls stretching as far as the eye could see. Over 60,000 delegates attended – which was a record for CPHI – so navigating the event was a challenge in itself. Each hall was packed with innovative pharmaceutical companies showcasing their latest advancements. I could’ve spent the whole day in just one hall and only scratched the surface of all the incredible stands, and I’m sure some of them cost more than my own home. I covered miles over the two days walking around the halls – my Garmin watch was very happy!

There was a constant buzz of activity, and the opportunities to engage in conversations with potential clients and partners were abundant. Every interaction provided an opportunity to share knowledge, discuss marketing strategies, and identify how kdm communications could assist companies in positioning themselves effectively within the industry. Despite the torrential downpour, the spirit of the event wasn’t dampened. It was the perfect metaphor for the bustling activity inside the venue – chaotic, yet full of energy and opportunity.

Building relationships and exploring new business

At both events, I was reminded of the importance of being physically present in the industry, and the most rewarding aspect was the relationships I built. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the value of face-to-face interaction, but there’s something irreplaceable about having a conversation in person. These events are invaluable for both nurturing existing relationships and forming new ones and, from a business perspective, they’re a goldmine of new opportunities. I met with key clients and industry figures, exchanged ideas and explored opportunities in a way that would have been difficult to replicate on a 2D screen.

These exhibitions offered the perfect setting for understanding the challenges businesses face and discussing how kdm communications can support them with tailored marketing solutions. Whether it was with a start-up looking to break into the market or a well-established company seeking to refine its messaging, the discussions were lively, insightful and, often, the starting point for future collaborations.

Press relations: A vital component

Another highlight of these events was the opportunity to engage directly with B2B trade editors. At CPHI, the pharmaceutical industry’s top media representatives were in attendance, so it was a prime opportunity to deepen press relations. Sitting down with editors in person allows us to discuss ideas, learn about upcoming editorial needs for the next year, and build relationships that are crucial for securing valuable press coverage for our clients.

We’ve always been firm believers in the power of good press relations, and being able to chat with the press face-to-face over a delicious hot chocolate gave us insights into the kinds of stories and innovations that are grabbing the media’s attention right now. This understanding helps us to tailor our clients’ editorials and secure media placements that will resonate with what the readers actually want.

Why these events matter for kdm

At kdm, we thrive on being able to engage with potential clients and partners at exhibitions, understand their challenges and offer marketing solutions that can help them stand out in a crowded marketplace. Attending ELRIG and CPHI wasn’t just about keeping up with the latest industry trends – it was about ensuring that kdm remains at the forefront of life sciences and pharmaceutical marketing. We’re always on the lookout for ways to better serve our clients, and these exhibitions provide the perfect forum to discover what’s next.

Whether rain or shine, I look forward to the next adventure!
